About MGibson

The design philosophy behind MGibson Knits has always been to make clothes that are enjoyable to wear. Over the years, we've become known for our fanciful novelty sweaters, hand-loomed of Peruvian cotton (a soft, silky long-strand cotton) in small family workshops in the outskirts of Lima, Peru. Our unique designs feature a relaxed fit, nature-inspired themes, fashion-forward colors, and hand-embroidered details. MGibson Knits have been sold at Nordstrom's, Coldwater Creek, Orvis, and hundreds of fine women's clothing boutiques across the United States.

Our newest collection focuses on sophisticated, stretchy knits with a universally flattering body-conscious fit, accented with lightweight geometric buttons. This year's palette include ice aqua, honeysuckle, periwinkle, and hot pink, as well as soothing neutrals in shades of sand, ivory, and maize.

Peggy Gibson, founder and owner of Boston-based MGibson Knits, has always had a passion for textiles and an eye for style. She designed and sewed her own clothes from the age of seven, but it wasn't until her post-college years that she was able to turn her passion into a career.

After graduating with a degree in comparative religions and anthropology, Peggy traveled to Bolivia and Peru for an anthropology project. Inspired by the textiles produced by the skilled local artisans there, she began to develop her own designs and worked with Peruvian women's knitting cooperatives to produce them.

Ethical trade practices have always been a priority for MGibson Knits. The skillful knitters who work with the company are often the sole supporters of their families and have always received living wages. Over the last twenty-five years, the company has worked with many of the same families. As the business has grown so has the knitters' ability to provide for their families. Many of them have been able to buy and furnish their own homes and send their children to college.

The production of each sweater is a collaborative effort. The sweater bodies are loomed in small home-based workshops and the parts are then distributed to neighborhood women, enabling them to work at home. They do the finishing work, sew the sweaters together, and add all the final touches including the embroidered and crocheted details that make each style unique. The resulting knits are a testament to the successful creative and economic partnering of these talented artisans in Peru and the MGibson design and sales team in the U.S.
